Progressive Christian Education for Children and Youth

Nursery

Throughout the year, during Sunday service, infants and toddlers are cared for by warm and loving caregivers in a safe and fun environment.

Sunday School

Children Pre-School age through 5th Grade start in the service with their families where they participate in hymns and community prayers, followed a special Children’s Time to engage with Pastor Pete. After Children’s Time, they go to their Sunday school classes for the remainder of the service.

Calendar

Sept (1st Sunday after Labor Day) through Second Sunday in June
– Adult volunteers lead the day’s lesson.
Mid-June through August
– Adult volunteers share a favorite craft or activity with the children.

Curriculum

We have developed a 3-year Bible based curriculum that provides a foundation in Christian history and values using a progressive

approach.

• Sept to Nov – Hebrew Bible (Old Testament)
• January to May – Life & Times of Jesus (New Testament)
• May to June – Community Service/World Religions/Morals & Values

Classes for Children and Youth

Pre-School Age Appropriate lessons are brief to allow for a free play time each week. Lessons incorporate stories, songs, and crafts led by warm, loving teachers.

Elementary Age (K-5th Grades) – Through the use of cooperative games and activities, children explore the theme of the day which is then enhanced by story time and coordinating craft.

Pre-Confirmation (Grades 6th, 7th, 8th) – Meets the first and third Sundays of the month only. This 3-year program cycles through the Christian Faith, Other World Faith Traditions, and Values/Morals/Community Service. Teachers use a variety of resources as well as outside visits to other places of worship to teach the importance of the Christian Faith and it’s connection with other faith traditions.

Confirmation Class ( 9th Graders) Meets the first and third Sundays of the month only. Adult Leaders use the curriculum: “Way to Live; Christian Practices for Teens” which is broken down into 18 Christian Practices. It explores current issues facing teens today with a special focus on decision making skills.

High School Youth Group (Grades 9th – 12th) – Involves social activities and service projects and a mission trip each summer.

CE-Director

Since joining us in September, 2006, Karen Kent-Pyle has helped us to create a program that is rich in Christian stories and traditions, while staying true to the overall progressive view of the congregation. Her experience, enthusiasm, and love of children is evident in the deeply spiritual, yet fun and engaging lessons she creates each week.

Adult Education

The Adult Education Committee, members and minister offer classes, one-time events, book discussions or movies/videos followed by discussion. Adult Education offers church members and friends the opportunity to study and learn about topics of religious, philosophical and social relevance.  See our Church News blog for upcoming Adult Education offerings.

New Member Exploration
Pastor Pete Terpenning periodically leads a three session class at church. The purpose of this exploration is to give a brief overview of the history and program of this local church and of the United Church of Christ in general. It is open to anyone who is interested, but is not a requirement for membership. Long time members are also welcome who wish to learn more about our church and denomination. At the end of the class there will be an opportunity to join the church for those who choose to do so.

Library
The library serves its members on the spiritual journey, both as individuals and as a community. Books are available for loan. Donations are welcome!
